History of The Thinker Statue

The original Thinker Statue is 2 meters tall and is rather imposing. Rodin generous use of rough strokes imparts a sense of grandeur and a sense of contemplation and intellect in the face of terror. The thinker was initially tiled the Poet and was commissioned by the Museum of Decorative Arts in 1880 to grace the grand entrance of the museum. It is said that this statue was meant to portray Dante himself, but later evolved to become the magnificent embodiment of excellence in sculpture. The museum never opened and the great work was kept under wraps.

Rodin, then proceeded to make the full sized relief in 1902, although it was never shown to public until 1904 and that too only to paying audiences. Around the same time a similar casting was made by A.A Hebrard for the Lousiana Exposition in Missouri, USA but Rodin dismissed it saying it was an inferior copy. The statue is presently in Kentucky, USA at the University of Louisville.

In 1906, ‘The Thinker Statue’ was Rodin’s first statue to be publicly displayed and was inherently the property of Paris, France. It was later displayed at the Pantheon before moving on to the Rodin Museum in 1922. The original cast and mold of ‘The Thinker Statue’ have been loaned to museums worldwide and has representations in all continents. Subsequently many talented artists have studied The Thinker Statue and made exact reproductions. The Thinker Statue is the symbol of excellence and people worldwide have been investing in one.
